  INDORE CITY ATTRACTIONS

  Rajwada
Rajwada   This magnificent palace belonged to the Holkers during the period of their reign over the region. The architecture of this palace is a fine blend of French, Mughal and Maratha architecture. The palace is 200 years old and with its beautiful galleries, gardens, fountains, and an artificial waterfall, is undoubtedly one of the major tourist attractions in Indore.
  Lal Bagh Palace
Lal Bagh Palace  

This is the other palace of importance built by the Holkers. The palace is an elegant structure and is still used for important functions and ceremonies, as was its purpose in the past. The sprawling gardens of the palace and the interiors make it an important landmark in Indore.

 Central Museum
Central Museum  

This museum exhibits many artifacts from the prehistoric to modern era. The most interesting among these are the Paramara sculptures from the 11th and 12th centuries found at Hinglajgarh. The museum has an impressive collection of coins, arms, armors and paintings.

  Chattri Bagh
Chattri Bagh   The Chattris are the local name given to domed structures built as memorials at the cremation sites of the important rulers of the region. The Chattri Bagh is one of the highlights of tourism in Indore as it contains many beautiful memorials that are of special interest to those interested in the history of the region. The garden is located near the Khan River. The memorial of Malhar Rao Holker, the founder of the Holker dynasty is the most prominent structure in the complex.
  Gandhi Hall
Gandhi Hall  

Once prettiest building of Indore this Hall was constructed in 1904. Originally named King Edwards Hall it was renamed in 1948 as Mahatma Gandhi Hall. Its architectural style is Indo-Gothic, made in seoni stone, its domes and steeples are a landmark of Indore city today. It has a four-faced clock tower in front, because of which it is locally known as Ghanta Ghar. The central hall has a capacity for 200 people and is most popular for the various book & painting exhibitions, sales fairs held throughout the year. It also has a library, children's park, and temple.

 Ujjain
Ujjain  

Ujjain is situated at a distance of 56 km from Indore. The city of Ujjain is one of the ancient cities of the country. It is considered to be one of the seven sacred places to attain Moksha. The city attracts a great deal of pilgrims, as it is the abode of one of the Jyotirlingas. Ujjain city of India is located on the banks of River Shipra and exists from the early days of the Indian civilization. The 108 Jain temples date back 1,500 years, all arranged on the steps of a hill.

 Mandu
Mandu   Mandu, or Mandavgarh, is a ruined city in the Dhar district in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh state, central India. Mandu celebrates in stone the life and love of the poet-prince Baz Bahadur for his consort, Rani Roopmati. The balladeers of Malwa still sing of the romance of these royal lovers. It is situated at a distance of about 90 km from the Indore city of Madhya Pradesh. The town is located amidst the Vindhya Ranges, at an elevation of 2000 feet above the sea level. It was originally founded in the 10th century by the Parmar rulers who made it their fort capital.
Patal Pani
Patal Pani   Another place of interest near Indore is Patal Pani. It is situated at a distance of 36 km from Indore. Patal Pani is famous for its splendid waterfall. The waterfall descends from a height of 150 feet into a pond (kund). The depth of the kund is still unknown. According to popular belief, the bottom of this deep kund [trench] reaches Patal (the mythological world below Earth or the netherworld). This way the place got its name Patal Pani. It is a very famous picnic spot near Indore.
  Bagh Caves
Bagh Caves   There are 9 caves of which only 5 have survived, Cave No. 4 known as Rang Mahal is the most magnificent. There are seven Buddhist rock cut caves situated on the bank of Baghini river. These consist of Viharas stupa in chaitya hall and residential cells. There are several sculptures of Buddha and Boddhisattvas and was one covered lavishly with painting of which there are some traces now. A painting of the bodhisattva Padmapani, of these caves is reputed as a prototype of the well- known Padmapani figure at Ajanta. The rock cut caves were quarried between 5th -6th century AD.
  Maheshwar
Maheshwar   Situated on the banks of river Narmada, This town was arlier known as Maheshmati. It gained importance under Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar who constructed many temples and ghats on the banks of the Narmada.
 
 

  RELIGIOUS PLACES IN INDORE

 Kaanch Mandir
Kaanch Mandir  

This magnificent temple is one of the major sites covered by the Madhya Pradesh tour packages. This Jain temple is intricately adorned by glasses that reflect 21 images of Lord Mahavir, which correspond to the 21 Jain Tirthankaras. The splendid glass work inside the temple is a fascinating example of master craftsmanship. This temple is also called Seth Hukumchand temple, after its builder.

  Bada Ganpati
Bada Ganpati   Bada translates to large and Ganapati is the regional name for the famous elephant God in Hinduism. Ganapati is the major deity in this part of the country, and this temple has the largest statue of Ganapati in the world. The statue measures 8 meters and is made up of iron, copper, brass, gold and silver.
  Annapurna Temple
Annapurna Temple  

This magnificent temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Built in 9th century, the temple is one of the oldest temples in Madhya Pradesh. Situated in Indore Fort, the temple is more than 100 feet high making it the highest building in the fort. The structure perfectly embodies architectural styles of Dravidians and Indo-Aryans. The roof of the temple is built in Dravidian style whereas the walls and the decorations on it are predominantly Indo-Aryan. Like in other temples built in the same era, there are no mandapams or pillared halls in this temple, which is quite surprising.

 Omkareshwar Temple
Omkareshwar Temple   Omkareshwar is a holy town situated at a distance of 77 km from Indore. It derives its name from the sacred Hindu symbol of Om. The place is a pilgrimage site, as there are a number of Hindu temples and Jain temples located here. It is basically an island, in the shape of Om, on the confluence of the rivers Narmada and Kaveri.
 Gomatgiri
Gomatgiri  

Another place to visit is Gomatgiri, housing a 21 feet statue of Lord Gomateshwar. In 1981, the M.P. government donated a hillock to the Jain Samaj, which constructed a 21 foot statue of Gomateshwar, a replica of the Bahubali statue of Shrawanbegola. They also built 24 marble temples with shikars one for each Tirthankar. Gomatgiri is approached by a lovely picturesque drive 10 minutes from the city airport. It also has a guest house, a dharamshala and a restaurant.
